Understanding Bolt Pattern Notation
Bolt patterns are expressed as two numbers: the number of lug holes and the diameter of the circle they form (the Pitch Circle Diameter, or PCD). For example, 5x4.75" means five lug holes arranged on a 4.75-inch diameter circle — the classic GM pattern found on many muscle cars and purpose-built race vehicles.
Common drag racing bolt patterns include:
- 5x4.75" (5x120.65mm) — GM/Chevrolet, widely used in bracket and Pro Stock builds
- 5x4.5" (5x114.3mm) — Ford, Mopar, and many import platforms
- 5x5" (5x127mm) — Full-size GM trucks and some specialty race applications
- 4x4.25" (4x108mm) — Vintage Ford and some lightweight race builds
How to Measure Your Bolt Pattern
For a 5-lug pattern, measure from the center of one stud to the outer edge of the stud directly across from it. For an even-lug pattern (4, 6, or 8 lugs), measure center-to-center across directly opposing studs.
If you're building from scratch or running a custom rear end, verify the pattern at the axle flange — not from a spec sheet. Aftermarket axles and floaters can vary from OEM specs.
Hub Bore: The Other Critical Dimension
Beyond the bolt pattern, the hub bore (center bore) must match or be adapted to your hub. A wheel that's lug-centric rather than hub-centric relies entirely on the lug nuts for centering — acceptable in drag racing where wheel loads are primarily linear, but worth understanding for your specific application.
Matching Wheels to Your Build
At Gunn Performance Parts, our drag racing wheels are engineered for specific fitment applications. The Verbrand Drag Racing Wheel and Buert Forged Aluminum Drag Racing Wheel are available in the most common drag racing bolt patterns — built to SFI standards and designed for the unique load profiles for Drag Racing.
